Features such as a hump on the nasal bridge, asymmetry, width of the nasal tip, frontal deviation, or a size that appears disproportionate to the face are analyzed individually. The aim is not to create the same nose shape for everyone, but to plan a natural, balanced, and long-term stable result that is harmonious with the person’s facial features.

In patients with breathing problems, septal deviation, enlarged turbinates, nasal valve narrowing, or structural abnormalities caused by previous trauma may also be present. In this case, aesthetic changes and functional correction may be part of the same surgery. An approach focused only on external appearance may negatively affect the airway, especially in noses that require narrowing. Therefore, a detailed evaluation of the internal nasal structures during the examination is important.

For surgery, physical development should be largely complete, the general health condition should be suitable, and expectations should be realistic. Smoking, certain systemic diseases that may affect healing, bleeding tendency, or regularly used medications may alter the surgical plan. These do not necessarily prevent surgery, but they should be clearly disclosed to ensure a safe process.

Most frequently asked rhinoplasty questions

Will breathing improve with surgery?

The answer to this question depends on the source of the breathing problem. If septal deviation, narrowing in the nasal valve area, or enlarged turbinates are identified, treatment can be planned at the same time as the aesthetic surgery. However, in conditions such as allergies, chronic mucosal swelling, or sinus disease, medical treatment may be required in addition to surgery.

A successful rhinoplasty is not simply about making the nose smaller. The anatomical framework that supports airflow must be preserved and, when necessary, reinforced. Especially in people who have previously undergone surgery, cartilage support may be reduced, making careful management of function even more important.

How natural will the result look?

Naturalness does not mean that the nose must look as though it has never been operated on. A more accurate definition is that the nose should be harmonious with the other features of the face and should not overshadow the person’s facial expressions or characteristic appearance. An excessively upturned tip, an overly narrow nasal bridge, or a profile designed independently of facial proportions may attract attention in the short term but may not be suitable for every patient.

Skin thickness, cartilage strength, existing asymmetry, and healing tissue are the main factors that determine the result. For example, refinement and definition may develop more slowly in thick-skinned noses. In thin skin, however, minor irregularities may become more noticeable. Therefore, although digital visualizations can help discuss a target, they should not be interpreted as a guarantee of the final result.

Is the open technique or closed technique preferred?

Both techniques can be used successfully in suitable patients. In open rhinoplasty, the procedure is performed through a small incision beneath the nasal tip, allowing direct visualization of the cartilage structures. This visibility may make planning easier, especially in cases involving significant asymmetry, severe deviation, nasal tip reshaping, or revision surgery.

In the closed technique, the incisions are made inside the nose. In some suitable cases, it may offer the advantage of more limited external incisions. However, the name of the technique does not determine the quality of the surgery. The main determining factors are accurate identification of the problem, a tissue-preserving surgical approach, and long-term support of the nasal framework.

How long does recovery take?

At the end of the first week, the cast or external splint is usually removed. During this period, swelling, bruising, and nasal congestion may occur; their severity varies depending on the procedures performed and the individual’s healing characteristics. Most people can return to social life within approximately 7-10 days. For physical exertion, contact sports, wearing glasses, and sun exposure, however, the time periods recommended by the doctor should be followed.

Swelling, particularly in the nasal tip area, resolves more slowly. While a significant change can be observed during the first months, evaluation of the final shape usually takes around 12 months. Thick skin, extensive nasal tip procedures, and revision surgery may prolong this process. Patient follow-up is a natural part of healing.

What are pain and postoperative care like?

After rhinoplasty, most patients describe a feeling of pressure, fullness, and congestion rather than severe pain. Pain control is provided with medications appropriate for the individual. Keeping the head elevated during the first days, applying the recommended cold compresses correctly, and avoiding the risk of trauma to the nose help manage swelling.

Cleaning the inside of the nose forcefully, blowing the nose in the early period, or using sprays and supplements without recommendation may negatively affect healing. During follow-up visits, crusting, internal healing, and airway patency are evaluated. Postoperative care should be taken as seriously as the surgery itself.

Why is revision rhinoplasty planned differently?

In people who have previously undergone nasal surgery, the problem may not be limited to appearance. Difficulty breathing, collapsed nasal sidewalls, cartilage deficiency, significant asymmetry, an overly reduced nasal structure, or stiffness related to healing tissue may occur. Revision rhinoplasty requires reassessment of the existing anatomy and often reconstruction of deficient support.

In these surgeries, additional graft options such as cartilage taken from the ear or rib may be considered. They are not required in every patient; the decision is made according to the amount of cartilage remaining in the nose and the correction being planned. It is generally preferred to wait at least one year after the previous surgery to allow healing to be largely completed. However, in cases of significant functional loss or serious structural problems, evaluation may be performed earlier.

Because of the complexity of revision surgery, expectations should be discussed openly. Sometimes, rather than trying to correct every minor irregularity in a single session, prioritizing function and structural support is a more appropriate approach for safe and natural healing.

Which questions should be addressed during the examination?

In a thorough evaluation, it is important to understand not only what the patient wants to change, but also why they want to change it. Frontal and profile photographs, facial proportions, skin structure, breathing quality, and intranasal examination are evaluated together. When considered necessary, endoscopic examination, sinus evaluation, or additional imaging may be performed.

The patient’s description of current breathing problems, history of trauma, previous surgeries, regular medications, and expectations from daily life directly affects planning. In addition to the question “What will my nose look like?”, questions such as “How will my airway be preserved?”, “How will my skin structure affect healing?”, and “Is there a possibility that I may need revision surgery?” are also meaningful.

As in the approach of Prof. Dr. Gediz Murat Serin, a detailed evaluation that considers aesthetic goals and nasal function together forms the basis of a more predictable surgical plan, especially in complex and revision cases.

The decision to undergo rhinoplasty should not be made hastily. An honest consultation based on your own facial features, breathing needs, and the amount of time you can devote to recovery will bring you closer not to someone else’s nose, but to a healthy result that is suitable for you.

Questions about rhinoplasty are often not limited to the shape of the nose.
