In some cases, the ear appears completely normal, but the person feels severe pain. The reason for this is that <strong>the nerve network in the head and neck is shared<\/strong>. <strong>&#8220;The nerve is the body&#8217;s cable system. Think of it like an electrical cable; it carries the message from one place to another.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A problem originating from the teeth, jaw joint, throat, or neck can create <strong>pain referred to the ear<\/strong> through the same nerve pathways. Neck Muscle Tension and Posture Disorders<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>When the muscles surrounding the cervical vertebrae, especially the trapezius and sternocleidomastoid muscles, become tense, pain can radiate to the ear.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who experiences it frequently?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Those working long hours at the computer<\/li>\n<li>Those using the phone for long periods while leaning forward<\/li>\n<li>Those experiencing stress-related muscle clenching<\/li>\n<li>Those with overload after sports<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Clinical feature:<\/strong><br \/>\nPain usually <strong>increases with neck movements<\/strong> and is in the form of pressure radiating behind the ear.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Neuralgias_Trigeminal_Glossopharyngeal_Vagus_Nerve\"><\/span>4. Neuralgias (Trigeminal, Glossopharyngeal, Vagus Nerve)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>It is the creation of sudden and severe pain attacks by some nerves in the head and neck.<br \/>\nSince the ear is in close proximity to the branches of these nerves, referred pain is common.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Trigeminal_Neuralgia\"><\/span>Trigeminal Neuralgia<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Creates short attacks like electric shocks in the face. Chewing, speaking, or touching the face triggers pain.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Glossopharyngeal_Neuralgia\"><\/span>Glossopharyngeal Neuralgia<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Pain is usually in the form of a sharp line <strong>between the throat, pharynx, and ear<\/strong>.<br \/>\nIt is triggered by swallowing and coughing.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Vagus_Nerve_Pains\"><\/span>Vagus Nerve Pains<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Can create a deeper, dull, and difficult-to-explain ear pain. It is especially seen in irritations of the lower part of the throat.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_Tonsil_Inflammations_Tonsillitis_Peritonsillar_Abscess\"><\/span>5. Tonsil Inflammations (Tonsillitis, Peritonsillar Abscess)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Tonsils receive stimulation from areas close to the ear through the glossopharyngeal nerve.<br \/>\nTherefore, an infection in the throat often manifests with <strong>unilateral ear pain<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Accompanying symptoms:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Severe pain when swallowing<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty opening the mouth<\/li>\n<li>Fever<\/li>\n<li>Bad breath<\/li>\n<li>Lymph node swelling in the neck<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If a peritonsillar abscess develops, the pain becomes much more severe and often radiates to the ear.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6_Tongue_Base_Pharynx_or_Larynx_Tumors\"><\/span>6. Tongue Base, Pharynx, or Larynx Tumors<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>It should definitely be kept in mind in people over 40 years of age with a history of smoking and alcohol.<br \/>\nThese tumors may not show symptoms in the early period, but <strong>unilateral, persistent, and unexplained ear pain<\/strong> is one of the most important warning signs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Other warning signs:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hoarseness<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty swallowing<\/li>\n<li>Neck mass<\/li>\n<li>Weight loss<\/li>\n<li>Bloody sputum or bleeding from the mouth<\/li>\n<li>Persistent sore throat<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Therefore, if there is otalgia and the ear appears normal, the upper respiratory tract and neck must definitely undergo detailed endoscopic examination.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"7_Eagle_Syndrome_Elongated_Styloid_Process\"><\/span>7. Eagle Syndrome (Elongated Styloid Process)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>It occurs when the styloid process, which is normally small, becomes elongated or the stylohyoid ligament becomes calcified.<br \/>\nIt can create pressing, deep pain that sometimes radiates to the jaw-pharynx-ear.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Symptoms:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ear and facial pain increasing with swallowing<\/li>\n<li>Discomfort triggered by neck movements<\/li>\n<li>Feeling of fullness in the ear<\/li>\n<li>Tenderness in the tonsillar region on intraoral examination<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Diagnosis is made with CT, and treatment is quite successful in properly selected patients.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_Should_You_See_a_Doctor\"><\/span>When Should You See a Doctor?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In the following situations, ear pain should definitely be evaluated by an ENT specialist:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If no problem is found in the ear on examination<\/li>\n<li>If pain lasts longer than 3\u20135 days<\/li>\n<li>If it is unilateral and persistent<\/li>\n<li>If it increases with swallowing, speaking, or chewing<\/li>\n<li>If accompanied by sore throat, weight loss, or neck mass<\/li>\n<li>If there is a history of smoking and alcohol<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Evaluation_with_Prof_Dr_Gediz_Murat_Serin\"><\/span>Evaluation with Prof. Dr. Gediz Murat Serin<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Referred ear pain, when not correctly diagnosed, can continue for a long time and reduce quality of life.
