throat.<br \/>\nAlthough many people directly associate postnasal drip with <strong>chronic sinusitis<\/strong>, this is not always correct.<br \/>\nIn fact, postnasal drip can have many different causes, and for proper treatment, the cause must first be clarified.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Symptoms_of_Postnasal_Drip\"><\/span><strong>Symptoms of Postnasal Drip<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>People with postnasal drip typically present with the following complaints:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Constant mucus sensation in the throat<\/li>\n<li>Frequent need to clear the throat<\/li>\n<li>Morning throat dryness or burning<\/li>\n<li>Bad breath<\/li>\n<li>Sometimes cough and hoarseness<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These symptoms can be mild or severe depending on the underlying cause.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Main_Causes_of_Postnasal_Drip\"><\/span><strong>Main Causes of Postnasal Drip<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1-_Chronic_Sinusitis\"><\/span><strong>1-) Chronic Sinusitis<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In prolonged sinus inflammations, mucus accumulated in the sinuses flows toward the throat instead of the nose.<br \/>\nIn this condition, the discharge is usually <strong>thick, yellow-green colored<\/strong> and sometimes foul-smelling.<br \/>\nPatients especially feel the need to clear their throats when they wake up in the morning.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2-_Allergic_Rhinitis\"><\/span><strong>2-) Allergic Rhinitis<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Allergens such as pollen, house dust mites, mold, and animal dander cause edema and increased mucus in the nasal mucosa.<br \/>\nPostnasal drip in allergic rhinitis is usually <strong>clear, watery<\/strong> and shows seasonal characteristics.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3-_Vasomotor_Rhinitis\"><\/span><strong>3-) Vasomotor Rhinitis<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In this condition, which is not allergy-related but where nasal blood vessels are overly sensitive;<br \/>\ntriggers such as air temperature changes, strong odors, perfume, cigarette smoke cause nasal discharge.<br \/>\nThe amount of mucus increases, flows toward the throat, and creates a <strong>chronic discomfort sensation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4-_Cigarette_and_IQOS_Use\"><\/span><strong>4-) Cigarette and IQOS Use<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Cigarette smoke and heated tobacco products (<strong>IQOS<\/strong>) dry the nasal mucosa, disrupt the defense mechanism, and change the consistency of mucus.<br \/>\nThis condition increases susceptibility to both allergic and infection-related discharges.<br \/>\nPostnasal drip can become chronic in regular smokers.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5-_Insufficient_Water_Intake\"><\/span><strong>5-) Insufficient Water Intake<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Inadequate fluid consumption causes mucus to thicken. Thick mucus sticks to the throat and becomes difficult to clear.<br \/>\nTherefore, <strong>drinking adequate water daily<\/strong> is a simple but effective measure for those with postnasal drip complaints.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6-_Septum_Deviation_and_Turbinate_Hypertrophy\"><\/span><strong>6-) Septum Deviation and Turbinate Hypertrophy<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Curvature of the nasal septum (<strong>septum deviation<\/strong>) and enlargement of nasal turbinates (<strong>turbinate hypertrophy<\/strong>) <strong>do not cause postnasal drip by themselves<\/strong>.<br \/>\nHowever, by disrupting the airflow inside the nose, they can negatively affect sinus ventilation and mucus clearance.<br \/>\nThis can <strong>prepare the ground for sinusitis development<\/strong>, indirectly contributing to postnasal drip.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_is_Diagnosis_Made\"><\/span><strong>How is Diagnosis Made?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The most important step in postnasal drip is correctly identifying the cause.
