It manifests itself with complaints such as headache, facial fullness and pressure sensation, nasal congestion, nasal discharge, and loss of smell.<\/p>\n<article>I am Prof. Dr. Gediz Murat Serin, and I have been working as an ear, nose, and throat specialist since 2006. I have been a professor since 2018 and have been serving my patients at my clinic in Te\u015fvikiye since 2020. Especially for patients who come with chronic sinusitis and nasal congestion complaints, the most important issue is to make an accurate diagnosis and create a personalized treatment plan.<\/p>\n<p>So what is the real cause of sinusitis? This flow helps the sinuses clean themselves. The area that provides this natural flow of sinuses is called the <strong>ostiomeatal complex (OMC)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>OMC can become blocked in some situations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Nasal bone curvatures (septum deviation)<\/li>\n<li>Growth of nasal tissues (concha hypertrophy)<\/li>\n<li>Polyps (tissue formation in the nose)<\/li>\n<li>Long-lasting allergies or chronic inflammations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When OMC is blocked, the sinuses cannot ventilate and mucus begins to accumulate inside. This environment becomes ideal for bacteria to multiply and sinusitis occurs as a result.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Tooth-Related_Sinusitis_Insidious_and_Often_Overlooked_Cause\"><\/span>Tooth-Related Sinusitis: Insidious and Often Overlooked Cause<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Most patients think sinusitis is nasal-related. However, sometimes an unexpected cause comes into play: <strong>Tooth-related sinusitis<\/strong>, also known as <strong>odontogenic sinusitis<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The roots of the molar and premolar teeth located in the upper jaw are very close to the maxillary sinus (upper jaw sinus). If these teeth have decay, abscess, cyst, or failed dental treatment, this infection can easily spread to the sinus.<\/p>\n<p>There is a thin membrane that lines the inside of the sinus, which we call the <strong>Schneiderian membrane<\/strong>. Normally, this membrane ensures that the sinus stays clean. However, tooth-related infections damage this membrane, causing inflammation and discharge inside the sinus.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Symptoms_of_Tooth-Related_Sinusitis\"><\/span>Symptoms of Tooth-Related Sinusitis<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>\u2705 <strong>Unilateral nasal congestion and discharge<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Usually occurs only on one side (especially on the side close to the upper teeth).<\/li>\n<li>The discharge is mostly foul-smelling, yellow-green in color.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u2705 <strong>Facial pain and fullness<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pressure and sensitivity are especially felt in the cheek area and the area close to the tooth roots.<\/li>\n<li>This pain may increase when bending or leaning forward.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u2705 <strong>Bad breath<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bacteria and inflammation that fill the sinus cause bad breath in the mouth.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u2705 <strong>Dental history<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you have recently had tooth extraction, root canal treatment, implant, or gum abscess, be careful!<\/li>\n<li>Upper molar teeth (4th, 5th, and 6th teeth) are very close to the sinus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u2705 <strong>Postnasal drip<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There may be a continuously flowing, foul-smelling and thick consistency discharge toward the throat.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u2705 <strong>Not responding to other treatments<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Classic sinusitis medications provide temporary relief, but complaints continue to recur.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_is_Tooth-Related_Sinusitis_Diagnosed\"><\/span>How is Tooth-Related Sinusitis Diagnosed?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>\ud83d\udd0e <strong>Dental examination<\/strong>: Detailed examination of the upper back teeth is essential.<\/p>\n<p>\ud83d\udd0e <strong>Sinus tomography (CT)<\/strong>: Findings such as the proximity of tooth roots to the sinus floor, fluid accumulation in the sinus, or bone erosion are revealed.<\/p>\n<p>\ud83d\udd0e <strong>Endoscopic examination<\/strong>: The openings of the sinuses are checked from inside the nose with the help of a camera, and the source of the discharge is identified.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_is_Treatment_Performed\"><\/span>How is Treatment Performed?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>\ud83e\uddb7 First, the dental problem must be resolved (extraction, root canal treatment, cleaning of infected tooth, etc.).<\/p>\n<p>\ud83d\udc43 Then the inside of the sinus is cleaned, and if necessary, air flow is restored with endoscopic sinus surgery.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"In_Conclusion\"><\/span>In Conclusion<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>If you have <strong>unilateral, foul-smelling nasal discharge<\/strong>, pain in the cheek area, bad breath, or have had dental problems in the past, the possibility of tooth-related sinusitis is very high.
